Convict Notes
Prisoner discharged from H M Gaol, week ending 4 Oct 1871. William Callaghan of Hobart Town, per Mount Stuart Elphinstone 1, F.S., tried at Kempton on the 2nd Sept 1871, of Larceny, sentenced 1 month, native of Liverpool, age 45yrs, 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair. Tasmania Police Gazette, 6th Oct 1871, p162.
I believe William Callaghan to be my great grandfather. He married Bridget Meere an immigrant from Ireland who arrived in V.D.L. with her sister Margaret on vessel Duchess of Northumberland in 1854. They married at the Church of St.Joseph Hobart 19 june 1867 &. had two children namely William Callaghan born 16 March 1875 and Sarah Jane Callaghan born 1868. He died 15th october 1889 in Hobart aged 69 years.
William Callaghan was 22 on arrival in VDL. He was indicted for stealing 14 pounds from his master Andrew Pierce at Penzance. He was born in London but brought up near Penzance, had a brother called George and a sister Nancy at his native place. William was 5'3 3/4" tall, single, protestant, could read and write a little, fair complexion, dark brown hair and eyebrows, hazel eyes, medium mouth, nose and chin. Scar on left eyebrow, scar on right cheek, blue dot between forefinger and thumb right hand. Station of gang: Port Cygnet. Emerged from gang 17/6/1846. 17/11/1846: PB/ absent from Barracks without leave and found drunk in Hobart Town - to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for three months. 28/7/1847: Obscene Language - hard labour in chains. 17/9/1848: AWOL - Hard Labour. 13/11/1849: TOL 7/10/1857: COF Was again convicted 8/11/82 - for not maintaing his wife and ordered to pay 10s., per week. Was still working as a government hairdresser in New Norfolk in the early 80's. There were 3 or 4 William Callaghan's in Tasmania at the same time but he may have married Catherine Quinn (per Martin Luther) in Nov 1854 and they had 4 or 5 children. Catherine Quinn died 6/8/1897 aged 80.
