William DAVIS was convicted at Berks, England on 11 July 1826 for stealing handkerchiefs. 2 previous convictions. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Layton' arriving 1827. Stated he was a single man, Protestant and lasted worked for Martin, in Newbury, England. Colony of VDL: Assigned to work services, Hobart district. Several records of misconduct and punishments. 1833: insubordination. Sentence extended 2 yrs. Nov 1833: Absconded. Order to be sent to Port Arthur Penal Settlement for 12 mths. 13 April 1835: Absent without leave. To be transferred to Constitution Hill Road Party.
