Old Bailey Proceedings July 1832 Trial of William Edmonds WILLIAM EDMONDS,was indicted for stealing on the 25th of June,1 snuff- box,value 3s;18 cigars,value 12s;1 canister,value 8d,and 6 oz of snuff,value 3s,the goods of John Schofield. JOHN SCHOFIELD,I am a tobacconist,and live in St John's lane.The prisoner was in the habit of coming to my house for cigars and other things-on the 25th of June he came early in the morning;I stood on the stairs and watched him -I saw him take a snuff-box,then a lot of cigars,and then a Scotch snuff-box from my window,and put them in his pocket;I sent for an officer,who took him. Cross-examined by MR.PHILLIPS. Q.Was he tipsy ?. A.I do not consider that he was;I think he had been drinking -it was about seven o'clock in the morning. WILLIAM ALLEN (Police-constable G38.) I took the prisoner -I found property on him;he stated in going along that he had been carrying on the game for a fortnight;these things were in his coat pockets. Cross-examined.Q.Was he not tipsy?.A. I did not perceive it. The prisoner is of good character. GUILTY.Aged 48. Recommended to mercy- Confined for Six Weeks I am sure if this correct because of the verdict but everything else fits.
