William GEORGE was convicted at Exeter, England, 1840 for stealing 5/- from a tin and also a coat. Flogged, 24 lashes. Once previously punished for insolence. Sentenced to 4 years at Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight. Further transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) for 7 years, on the ship 'Mandarin' arriving 1843. William GEORGE was one of the Parkhurst Boys (juvenile offenders) transported. Roman Catholic; can read & write a little; single; trade - shoemaker. Native place - Exeter, England. Probation: 1 year at Jerusalem, Tasmania. Released from 1st stage of probation 10/06/1845. 14 July 1845: Being idle and disorderly. 14 days hard labour at House of Correction, Hobart.
