Convict Notes
In November 1832 William Scott appeared at Edinburgh High Court of Justiciary charged with 'feloniously entering the premises of Mesrs Scott & Orr, druggist, Princes Street on three occasions and stealing money and lozenges.' He pleaded guilty and received 14 years transportation - see Scotsman newspaper 10 November 1832 p 3 on 'High Court of Jusiciary'.

1833: On arrival in VDL, he was listed as 18, a labourer and single (see http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/default.aspx?detail=1&type=I&id=CON18/1/9). 1835, 30 December: William Scott was sentenced to 12 months' jail for cutting and maiming Constable Solomon. he was sent to Port Arthur. 1840, 17 November: He received a Ticket of Leave. 1846, 20 January: Granted a Conditional Pardon. 1853, 28 March: He received his Free Certificate (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-40$init=CON31-1-40p43).
1833, 1 April: William Scott, 16, convicted for housebreaking, was received from Edinburgh aboard the prison Hulk Justitia at Woolwich. He was sent from there for transportation on 11 June (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849). His co-accused John Williams was also sent to the Justitia and for transportation on the same days.

Accused: William Scott, son of William Scott, tailor, Age: 16, flesher, Address: Residing with father, Davie Street, Edinburgh, Origin: Born in Lauder. [Note: A flesher was a butcher, or a person who prepared animal hide by scraping off flesh with a knife, according to the Dictionary of Old Occupations at https://www.familyresearcher.co.uk/. His occupation is listed in the summary section above as a butcher because flesher was not an available option). Accused: Joseph McEwan, son of Thomas McEwan, weaver, Age: 17, drawboy, Address: Hatter's Close, Head, Pleasance, Edinburgh, with father, Origin: Born in Edinburgh (see National Records of Scotland; Reference AD14/33/518). --0-- 1833, 11 March: Trial papers relating to Joseph McEwan, William Scott for the crime of theft by housebreaking.
