At Norwich, Robert. John, and Wm. Howell, brothers, and Wm. Marshall. Wm. Massingham, and Wm. Scottow, have been committed for trial, charged with committing some of the most daring burglaries upon record. They are charged with breaking and entering various houses, from which they stole watches, plate, money, wearing apparel, and any portable article which conveniently convey away. They were observed by a woman to enter more than one house at Whitwell, near Keepham. They took from one cottage guineas and silver watch, and in another had a more limited success. A pursuit commenced, and the thieves having dropped the property above-mentioned on the road, concealed themselves in a wood, which was so well watched that when they at length quitted their hiding-place they were again tracked at their very heels. Thus pressed they took to the fields, but soon were surrounded by harvest-men at work, and seeing their caption inevitable, they determined upon resistance. The first man who came up was knocked down, and skirmish ensued, but they were soon overpowered, taken, and conveyed and conveyed to the Castle. John Bull, 12 Sep 1825. Robt. Robert Howell, John Howell, W. Howell, W. Marshall, Wm. Massingham, and W. Scottow, for burglary in the house R. Prior, of Whitwell. The Judge considered this last of so aggravated a nature that he hesitated in his determination as to whether the law should take its course but on reflection, he had resolved to spare their lives, and they were ordered to be transported for life Flemings British Farmers Chronicle, 3 April 1826. The following prisoners have been removed from the Castle at Norwich, on board the Leviathan hulk, pursuant to their several sentences being carried into execution.—Jos. West, Robert Howell, Wm.
