William SMITH was convicted at Adelaide, South Australia on 12 Aug 1850 for Highway Robbery, stealing watches and money. Life Sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) arriving per the ship 'Deslandes' on 31 Oct 1850. (William had arrived "free", as a child, in 1825 to Sydney per 'Jane Katherine'. Father - John. Mother - Mary. Sister - Sarah - all at Sydney. Williams stated he went to Adelaide in April 1850.) VDL: 30 months Probation Period. Assigned at Cascades, South Hobart, Tasmania. Aged 35yrs; single man; 5'8"; ruddy complexion; brown hair; grey eyes; a millwright and engineer. Native place of birth: Manchester, England. 1853: a Constable at coal mines. 1853: meritorious service recorded for apprehending 4 absconders at Impression Bay. 30 Oct 1855: Ticket of Leave granted. 19 Jan 1858: Conditional Pardon approved.
