Colonial Secretary's Papers Date; 25-27 Feb-Mar 1822 John Williams & William Smith Sentenced to death. In reports of prisoners tried at Court of Criminal Jurisdiction Offence; Stealing 50 sheep Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen's Land Advertiser - Sat 27 Apr 1822. Page 2. HOBART TOWN. Execution.—On Thursday morning, about 9 o'clock, John Williams and William Smith, pursuant to their sentence for sheep-stealing, were executed upon a platform erected about half a mile from the town, at the upper end of Macquarie street, on the road to Cascade.
Crime date May 31, 1792, trial date July 4, 1792 at the Old Bailey, 21 years old at the time. Charged with assaulting John Proctor and stealing a silver watch valued at 20s, a steel seal valued at 1d, a stone steal set in metal valued at 2d and a silk ribbon valued at 2d. Death commuted to life.
