Convict Notes
William was born in Lythe, North Yorkshire, England in 1796. He was the son of John Stephenson and Elizabeth Womprey. He was christened on 13 Oct 1796 in Lythe, Yorkshire, England. He married Sarah Goddard in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1822. They had 7 children. William had been transported to Australia for poaching and assaulting a game keeper at Trent Bridge in 1827. He was sentenced to 7 years. On his gravestone there is an inscription referring to Nottingham. His wife Sarah, and their 3 children at the time, followed him to Australia in 1832. He passed away at Coolah on 29 Feb, 1880, aged 85 years. He was buried at Mulbring Uniting Church Cemetery at Mulbring, New South Wales, Australia. Probate was published on 9 May, 1881. Sophia Makin was executrix of the will.
