Marriage: 7 Feb 1853 Maria HAZEL (previously k/a Amelia WILLIAMS) to Joseph BALMFORTH. Maria aged 30 yrs, widow; Joseph aged 28yrs, farmer. At St. George's Church of England, Hobart. (ref. 37/1/12 no. 258). Children: 17 Oct 1855: Joseph Edward BALMFORTH (incorrectly indexed as "Barnforth". born at Hobart. Father - Joseph BALMFORTH. Mother - Amelia BALMFORTH. (ref. 32/1/3 no. 4662) 5 Sept 1859: Mary Ann BALMFORTH born at Hobart. Father - Joseph BALMORTH. Mother - Amelia WILLIAMS.




Application for permission to marry: 31 March 1848: Amelia WILLIAMS (per Asia) to George HAZEL (free, or free by servitude). Approved. Marriage: 27 May 1848: Amelia WILLIAMS, aged 25 yrs, spinster to George HAZEL aged 40 yrs, a candle maker. At Bethesda Church of England, Hobart. (ref. 37/1/7 no. 1691) Death of George Hazell in 1852.




Amelia WILLIAMS was convicted at Middlesex, London on 14 Oct 1846 for stealing a jacket. Previously convicted for stealing a shawl. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the Asia arriving 21 July 1847. Widow; house & nurse maid; Protestant; aged 23yrs; 5'3" height; sallow complexion; dark hair; Hazel eyes; can read. Native place of birth: Aldgate (ref. convict record) Stated on convict record that her husband had died since she had been convicted. Father: John Mother: Maria Sisters: Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth Brothers: John & Charles VDL: Station Gang - the 'Anson' hulk on the River Derwent, nr Hobart. 6 mths Probation Period. Clear conduct record - no notes of any misconduct. 16 April 1850: Ticket of Leave granted.

Minutes of the Executive Meetings 5 January 1888 - 26 March 1903 Reference: TAHO, NS1637/1/3, p.37 c.1 Balmforth Maria 8 Feb 1900 - broken arm - a deserving case - relieved with rations 14 March 1901. Maria Balmforth. Murray Street, widow, who has been in receipt of a little assistance being unable to earn her living owing to contracted hand since her accident. Applied for 1/- a week towards her rent of a room. The son and daughter can manage the other 1/6 between them. They find it difficult to keep up the 2/6 having families of their own. This application was considered but it was decided that the Society could not entertain it at present. "Maria Smith" (aka Amelia/Annie Maria/Mary Anne Williams/Hazel/Balmforth/Smith)is buried at Cornelian Bay, C of E, Section V, No. 545 - there is a headstone - little remains of the inscription.
