SHREWSBURY ASSIZES. Daniel Williams, Luke Oliver, William Griffiths, and .James Clarke, were indicted for burglariously breaking and entering the house of T. Rodenhurst, of Colton, in Shropshire, on the night of the 5th of November last, and stealing a pistol, a number of country bank-notes, two metal snuff-boxes, and other articles of his property. The prosecutor, who is 81 years of age, gave the following account of the transaction:—On the night in question, between 11 and 12 o’clock, he was awakened by a noise made by persons who were attempting to enter his premises. He went down to the door, when a man, whom he had no doubt was the prisoner Griffiths, jumped in at the window with pistol which he had himself loaded before retired to rest, and which was his property. Griffiths immediately presented the pistol his breast, and ordered him to return to his bed. He obeyed this order, and when in bed was closely covered over with the bed clothes by Griffiths, who then left the chamber. While in this situation, he heard a voice exclaim, “Have you found it?” and another shout, “No;” after which Griffiths called to him  from the adjoining room to come to him there. followed this direction, and on entering the and three other men, and observed that a chest belonging to his daughter was broken open. They insisted on his showing them where the money was; he took out a secret drawer in which it was kept ; and one of the men reached over his shoulder and seized it. They then ordered him to return to bed, and neither to stir nor look ; obeyed them; and  and heard his son-in-law, who slept in the house, call out that he could not come to him, for he was fastened down  After some time all the men came to the bed-side of the prosecutor, and asked for rum; he said there was only half pint in the bureau; they then demanded gin, but  but he had none; and afterwards asked for ale, which he could not supply. In about an hour from the time they entered the premises they left them. Griffiths during the whole time held a candle inserted in a piece of elder, of which the pith had been hollowed ont, and which they must have brought with them, as he missed a candle. On the folic wing morning, he found that one of the he found that one of the windows was broken open, so as to admit a man, and that attempts had been made, apparently by a gimlet, on several of the shutters. He then ascertained that he had lost, besides the pistol, a watch, guineas in gold, the key of his stable door, a gun, two metal snuff-boxes, a silk handkerchief, knife, several notes of the Whitchurch bank, and two checks of that bank, for sums amounting to 650£. To the person of Griffiths he swore positively, and after some hesitation and difficulty, to that of Williams; but he could not with certainty identify the two other prisoners. On bis cross-examination Mr. Pearson, the witness became exceedingly angry, although the questions were not in themselves calculated to irritate. It appeared that the cause of his displeasure was, that he had heard that part of the money found on the prisoners, and to which he had claim, had been given up to the keeper of the gaol,, to whom it was intrusted, and applied to the counsel for the defence. ...
