Convict Notes

It is possible that Evan sailed to Adelaide aboard the Julia after his pardon in 1846.

OCCUPATION: He was a labourer's boy. 1832: On arrival in VDL, he was listed as 15 years old. He was described as "very good boy" during the voyage. He was granted a Conditional Pardon on 3 September 1841, and received his Free Certificate No.74 in 1846 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON18-1-10$init=CON18-1-10p58).

CRIME: Convicted at the Summer Assizes on 16 July, 1831, for stealing sheep, along with his two brothers - Thomas, 25, and James, 18. He was sentenced to 14 years' transportation while the other two received life sentences. All three were admitted to the prison hulk Justitia at Woolwich on 14 September 1831. Evan was sent from the hulk on 10 February for transportation on the KS Forbes along with his brother Thomas. Evan WILLIAMS was 14, born 1817, according to the hulk record (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
