I visited St Mary's Church in East Knoyle Wiltshire, England and was shown James Williams baptism records. It confirmed he was born on 17 August 1788, baptised on 24 August 1788 at that church and his mother was Ann Williams (unmarried). No record of the father was made.

31 May 1814 • Dorset, England Warranted 4 March for horse stealing. Imprisoned Dorchester Prison 17 March - 25 yrs old with wife and 3 children. Sentenced to death Lent Assizes. Sentence reprieved to Transportation.

Born: Maddington, Wiltshire England. Died: East Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. Arrived - Convict Marquis of Wellington 27 Jan 1815 after being held on the hulk 'Laurel' on Langston Harbour since 1 Jun 1814) was assigned as a servant to Hannibal Macarthur on his arrival. James was sent to Newcastle on the Lady Nelson in 1819. 1821 he was assigned to Macguire's Gang, In 1822 his Petition for a ToL was granted, re-assigned, his conduct was in question and he was working as a Baker. In 1822 re-assigned to McGuire's Gang in Sydney The Rev. G A Middleton requested he be given a pass with his family to Newcastle. Finally a Full Pardon granted 21 Nov 1835 - Age: 47 James became a Miller purchasing a Mill at West Maitland, the family home was in Williams St, East Maitland.

James Williams was originally sentenced to death for horse-stealing. James was given a reprieve to life and transported to Sydney Australia. He left behind a wife and 3 children. He was given permission to marry Catherine Hancy 21/03/1818 at St Johns Church Parramatta despite being a bigamist.He was married by Rev Samuel Marsden.
