Assignation List: https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON13-1-6$init=CON13-1-6p22 John Williams, tried Somerset Assizes 29 March 1832, Life. ---------------------------------------------------- John Williams and Mary Anne, his wife, were charged with robbing with robbing Benjamin Brookman at Bridgwater, on the night of the 11th September. Prosecutor lives at Whitchurch —went to Weston Zoyland, afterwards to Bridgwater to see the illuminations—had 51s in a bag in his pocket; was rather tipsey in his life ; saw Mary Williams looking the pockets; —entered into conversation, when prisoner said that the house was looking much prettier on the other side. They both went round to the other side ; soon after which, prosecutor heard a bustle on one side of him, and the same time the prisoner put her hand in his pocket, and took out the contents. Prosecutor took hold her, and gave her in charge of constable, when John Williams came up and said, if he would liberate his wife, he would give him back his money, if he would inform him how much was in the bag. The Judge sentenced John Williams to be transported for life, and the woman was acquitted. The female was about ? years of age, and wept in most piteous way when sentence was passed on her husband. They had both been in prison before. The money was never found. The Judge animadverted on the folly of prosecutor's taking much cash with him in so crowded a place.
