Convict Notes
John Williams was 20 years old on arrival : Native Place:Liverpool. John was illiterate, protestant, single, 5'6¼" tall, sallow complexion, light hair, hazel eyes, scar under outer corner of right eyebrow, mole on left side of neck, J. W inside lower right arm, dot back of right hand, star, crown, and flower pot, rose and thistle, J x M inside lower left arm, four dots back of left hand. Not listed on NSW Gov. Convict Records. 6/7/1844 Parramatta Chronicle, NSW: James Campbell and John Williams, (both bond) illegally at large with fire arms. On the 1st May last these men, who were serving sentences in irons, at Twenty- Mile Hollow, when nt work apart froin the rest of the gang, contrived to knockdown the sentry who was guarding them, and getting possession of his musket effected their escape. Instant pursuit was made, and they were, in the course of the day, both captured by a prisoner of the name of Armstrong, who appears to have displayed considerable bravery, as from the cowardice of the soldier who accompanied him he had to contend with these ruffians single-handed, and run the risk of being shot, as the piece was levelled at him, but fortunately missed fire. Sentence, each 15 years to Norfolk Island. 6/7/1844: Was in Darlinghurst Goal. Sent to Norfolk Island. 20/9/1844: To VDL per 'Waterlily'. On arrival in VDL he was described as: 21 years old ?? - a Stone Cutter. Sent to Port Arthur. 19/4/1848: After many misconducts he was sent back to Norfolk Island. 26/12/1851: Arrived back in VDL from Norfolk Island. 29/1/1859: TOL 4/3/1862: TOL revoked - Absent (from Muster?) 25/8/1863: Fully committed for trial for converting a cheque for £8.19.2 - 3 years hard labour, one of which in chains. 2/9/1864: John Williams was Accidently Killed at Port Arthur by the falling of a tree. He was 44 years old.
