John Williams's "proper name" was James Drinkwater, his mother was Elizabeth and she was living in Manchester, according to his convict records. A possible baptism is for James Drinkwater, son of John Drinkwater, (a porter) and Betsey on 30 September 1827 at Manchester. John Williams age 72 bootmaker, died on 22 December 1900 at Launceston. He died suddenly in his garden, and newspapers reported that there was an inquest.

Learned shoe making while serving sentence Van Diemen's Land.Re-offended and sent to Port Arthur and extra time added to his sentence.Certificate of freedom issued 23 March 1853.
