William Williams was born in Denbigh, in 1805. He was a characater, known as 'Wil Ddrwg' or 'Bad Bill'. Five men went night poaching, supposedly to help a woman in need. There was a stand-off between the poachers and gamekeepers which became violent and almost resulted in the death of two keepers. He returned to Denbigh in 1880 after his first wife died, leaving his Australian wife and family behind. He lived with his daughter until his death and was buried in Prion near Denbigh.
Physical Description on arrival in Hobart Abt 15 Nov 1833 • Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia Trade-Ploughman, Height 5' 4 1/2", Complexion- Dark, Head-Round, Hair & Whiskers- D Brown, Visage-Oval, Forehead-low, Eyebrows-Brown, Eyes-D Grey, Nose-ML(Med Large), Mouth (MW), Chin-Round, Remarks-arms and face freckled. He was assigned to Benjamin Berthon and worked for him throughout his term as Convict 1641. Woodlands, Cross Marsh (now called Melton Mowbray). His friends 704 Edward Jones ; 1640 John Wynn ; 393 John Edwards were all plough men except 970 William Pierce - Groom. He spent 47 years in Australia. Returned to Denbigh about 9 years ago [so abt mid 1881 as not on 1881 Wales census.] Death 11 May 1890 • Pen Caeau Bach, Saron, Denbighshire, Wales. William Williams - a farmer Age: 85yrs He died from Paralysis [death certificate] at the home of his son in law Joseph Roberts & daughter Hannah. He is buried at Capel Saron See Baner ac Amserau Cymru 21 May 1890 p8. Head stone MS Er gof am William Williams Pen Caeau Bach a fu farw Mai 11 1890 yn 85 mlwydd oed' His son also William in the US helped pay for the headstone.
