On Thursday last, Peter Pass, Peter Rigby, William Ashley, Joseph Richardson, Isaac Williamson, and John Phillips, were removed from our Castle, in older to be put on board the Hulks, at Portsmouth, there to remain until their sentences (of transportation) call be put in execution. Lancaster Gazette, 27 Nov 1802. -------------------------------------------------- The Hulk records (HO-9-8-1) tell us what became of these 4 young lads, convicted for picking pockets and stealing a watch, who were all sent together. to the Hulk at Portmouth. Isaac Williamson, aged 16, was the only one who was transported to NSW.; John Phillips, age 14, died a year later on 2 Oct 1803, on the hulk; William Ashley, aged 14, joined H.M. Navy, (this was the time of the Napoleonic Wars, so sailors were needed, and the Navy recruited many convicts from the Hulks); and Joseph Richardson, aged 15, - his record states “Time expired” – he spent his whole sentence on the hulk.
