National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/15/9 1821 June 8 Prisoner name: William Reed. Prisoner occupation: Horse dealer. Court and date of trial: [Cornwall] Assizes [no date stated]. Crime: Robbery of money belonging to Mr Tuck of Truro [Cornwall]. Initial sentence: Transportation for life. Annotated (Outcome): Considered by Lord Sidmouth. Nil. Petitioner(s): Prisoner. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Distressed and innocent prisoner; convicted on evidence of two youths of suspect character; did not know other prisoners charged with him; family dependents. Additional Information: Tried with William Williamson, Joseph Higgs and William Simons. Williamson in New South Wales and Higgs and Simons in Bodmin gaol. On Leviathan hulk. -------------------------------------------------- There is an account of the trial published in The Royal Cornwall Gazette, 14 Aug 1819. They were picking pockets at Truro Fair.
William WILLIAMSON was convicted at Cornwall, England August 1819. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Coromandel' arriving 12 March 1820. Single man; aged 17yrs; 5'1 1/2"; a watchmaker's apprentice Native Place: Somersetshire, England Assigned out to work services in the Colony. Clear conduct record, no misconduct. 1832: Conditional Pardon approved, no. 342. 10 Feb 1840: Free Pardon approved, no. 534.
