Convict Notes
8/12/1837: John Carey Willis was executed for the murder of Dennis Maloney, at Port Macquarie. 10/11/1837 The Sydney Monitor: LAW INTELLIGENCE. SUPREME COURT, CRIMINAL SIDE. Before Mr. JUSTICE BURTON, and a Civil Jury. John Carey Willis was indicted for the wilful murder of Dennis Maloney, at Port Macquarie, by strangling him with a cord, or beating him over the head with a stick on the 29th August. .....the trial continued, very long and descriptive...... After an absence of about three minutes, the Jury returned a verdict of Guilty of wilful murder. Sentence of death (without naming the day) was then passed on him by Mr. Justice Burton, with that feeling and impressive manner for which he is so distinguished. As he was about to leave the bar, the hardened criminal cried out in a tone of carelessness " Thank God it's no worse." He displayed great apathy throughout the whole trial. 11/12/1837 The Sydney Herald: Execution -On Friday, George Wolfe convicted of robbery and wounding a policeman ; John Carey Willis convicted of murder, and Edward Doyle convicted of robbery and attempt to murder, were executed at the usual place pursuant to their sentences.
04/03/1836: Newcastle, NSW: Prisoner in iron gang charged with insolence and fighting at the works. Sentenced to 100 lashes. (Recorded under name 'John Carey'.)
