John Willis, for offering a forged Bank of England note, at Gravesend, knowing the same to be forged—14 Years Transportation. Kentish Weekly Post, 8 Aug 1817.


At the beginning of the week, a number of prisoners from the working gangs were discovered to have absented themselves, and several boats, the property of private persons, were shortly after missing also; from which latter discovery, a design was conjectured to have been formed by the absentees, to surprise and cut off some vessel or craft. … … Sydney, 1st August, 1818. WHEREAS, several Boats being missing from the Harbour, and the under-mentioned Convicts having absconded, supposed with an intention of taking some Vessel in order to make their Escape from this Colony; all Constables and others are hereby required to Apprehend and lodge in any of the Gaols in this Colony, All or Any of the Prisoners herewith described; viz. … Brickmakers. … J. Willis, carpenter, per Batavia, aged 25 ; native place London ; 5f. 6 in. high, fair ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. … Wm. Hutchinson, Principal Superintendent. Sydney Gazette, 13 Feb 1819. PRINCIPAL SUPERINTENDANT'S OFFICE, Sydney, 30th January, 1819. WHEREAS several Prisoners having absented themselves from their Government Work, and taken with them a Boat which has since been found, there is every Reason to suppose there is a numerous Gang collected together for some desperate and illegal Undertaking ; all Constables are hereby required to use their utmost Vigilance in apprehending the undermentioned, and lodging them in the nearest Gaol. John Willis, arrived in Ship Batavia, fair ruddy complexion; brown hair; hazle eyes; 5 feet 6 inches high ; from Carpenters' Lumberyard.
