Convict Notes
Alice Wilson was born about 1815 in Preston, Lancashire. I am not yet sure of her parents. One Court case appearance stated that the Alice Wilson in question was from Leyland which is close to Preston. It seems that she was a notorious prostitute and petty thief. She was tried at Preston Quarter Sessions on 9 April 1845 of stealing half a sovereign. She had also been convicted before of felony and was a single woman from Preston. Other offences included stealing 2 1/2 sovereigns and £50 from her master. She had also served 3 years for breaking windows and another offence [illegible] 3 months. She was sentenced to Life transportation. She was transported on the Hulk "Lloyds" (see source reference: CON41-1-7,177, page 165) and arrived in Tasmania on 7 November 1845. The Surgeon's Report stated that she was industrious and well behaved. Trade: Country (Farm) Servant. Description: Height (without shoes) 5ft 1 3/4" Age: 30 Complexion: Brown. Head: Oval. Hair: Black Visage: Oval Forehead: Low Eyebrows: Low Eyebrows: Brown Yes: Hazel Nose: Sharp Mouth: Wide Chin: Large Native Place: Preston Her period of Gang Probation was six months Alice Wilson who was now about 32 years old, married George Barnes, in Tasmania on May 17, 1847 about 18 months after Alice had arrived in Tasmania as a convict! On 5 July 1853 she tried to apply for a Ticket of Leave (toL) but was told to try again in 3 months which she did on 11 October 1853. She applied for a Convict Pardon (CP) on 14 August 1853 and it was approved on 24 October 1854. Her Convict record mentions that she had been transported before. As there are several mentions of her in the Preston Guardian newspaper between 1837 and 1845 I believe that her first transportation date would have had to have been before 1837.
Alice Wilson, aged 29, was convicted at Preston Quarter Sessions April 1845. Her crime stealing a half sovereign from John Barnes. She had previous convictions to her name as did her family according to Chairman Thomas Batty Addison.
