In July 1836, James Herkes and John Wilson were convicted of - breaking into the house of the Honourable Henry Cockburn at Charlotte Square and stealing three coats and a tartan mantle. Both having previous conviction for theft, they received transportation of 7 years - see Scotsman newspaper 13 July 1836 p 3 on 'High Court of Justiciary'.
