James Stiles died in January 1828, so is not recorded in the census and Mary's children were grown, so she is recorded alone. Sainty & Johnson; 1828 Census of New South Wales: Page 398. In September 1808, the couple were living in a room of a house shared with William Seals an emancipist. They were terrorised by a group of armed and masked bushrangers who beat Seals and then ransacked the house, stealing all the belongings of James and Mary and their children. They suffered considerable financial loss, had no clothes for the children and were forced to eat mushrooms and corn. They later gave evidence at the trial of one of the culprits.

In the colony, Mary married James Stiles (Convict, Scarborough, 1790). They married February 9 1811 at Windsor. They had three children, born between 1801 and 1804. (# See Flynn, Michael; The Second Fleet: Britain's Grim Convict Armada of 1790. page 553.

It would appear that Mary had a liaison with one Leonard White and this perhaps explains her sometime use of the surname. When transported, she brought her infant daughter Eliza Jane Leonard with her on board "William Pitt". Eliza would have been only 2 at the time.
