Convict Notes
Wm. Wiltshire, for stealing two pigs at Bratton and also for stealing a cart stallion, the property of Robert Giddings at Crookwood. Salisbury Journal, 9 Mar 1818 Salisbury. The business of our Assizes commenced on Monday last, before Mr. Justice Abbot and Mr. Justice Holroyd; the former presiding in the Crown Court, and the latter at Nisi Prius. The calendar of prisoners was very heavy, and their trials were not concluded till Thursday morning. The awful sentence of death was passed on the following prisoners, 17 in number: ... W. Wiltshire, for stealing a cart stallion belonging to R. Giddings, at Urchfont. Of the prisoners sentenced to death, all have been reprieved excepting William Gale, for sacrilege, who is to be executed on Tuesday the 24th instant. Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 14 March Nineteen convicts were on Thursday removed from Fisherton gaol, and put on board the Laurel hulk at Gosport, Salisbury Journal, 25 May 1818 HO 9-9-1 Records of Laurel, Hardy and York Hulks, in Portsmouth Harbour, 1805-1831, page 43. Received from Wiltshire May 1818, (19 prisoners) Wm. Wiltshire, age 33, convicted at Wilts Assizes for a felony, 7 March 1818, sentenced to transportation for life. Discharged (to ship) 3 June 1818, NSW.
