Somewhere around 1821, Joseph commenced a long term relationship with Sophia Dargin. Sophia had already married Patrick Brady (Convict, Rolla, 1802). There is no legal record of any marriage to Joseph. Joseph was sentenced to seven years at Port Macquarie in 1824, having been convicted of stealing a pig the property of William Wrightman in Aug 1823. His accomplice was Sophia's brother James Dargin. James Dargin was sentenced to three years at Port Macquarie. Joseph sailed to Port Macquarie aboard the ship 'Amity' on 19 Aug 1825. On 24 Aug 1825 he was recorded as having 'seduced the wife of Patrick Brady' and was proceeding to Port Macquarie. On 2 Sep 1825 it was noted that he was not married to 'Sophia Windred' when Sophia requested permission to go to Port Macquarie to be with him. It appears that she went anyway as on 2 Sep 1825 it was noted that she would be returned to Sydney as she was not lawfully married to Joseph. On the 20th of the same month she was reported as being too ill to travel back to Sydney. Sophia and Joseph had a large family, 8 children have been traced, born between 1822 and 1840.
