Tried 9 March 1818 Grey eyes, dark brown hair, a dark, ruddy complexion; 5 feet 5 1/4 inches tall 1822 absconded from Mr Underwood's service, recaptured and convicted of being a runaway on 5 February 1824. Sentenced to 50 lashes and transported to Port Macquarie on 20 February 1824. Then reunited with younger brother John from the "Coromandel 2" 4 April 1820. The 2 brothers worked on the road gang at Port Macquarie but escaped in 1824. It is believed that his brother John died during that escape. William escaped with 48 others in December 1824 and he was sent to Norfolk Island. John had been originally sentenced 7 years, William originally life and it is believed that William took Johns identity at some time as he was known as John on Norfolk island when he arrived in 1825. Left on the brig "Macwuarie" in 1827 as his sentence had expired and received a Certificate of Freedom in the name of John Windley. 1829 Married Martha Nichols and had 3 children 1840 Williams deception of taking his brothers name was discovered and he lost his freedom but was given a ticket of leave and allowed to return to his family. They had more children and in 1848 he was given his Conditional Pardon. His wife Martha died between 1850-1855 and William remarried 1855 to Charlotte Arnold a widow aged 36 and had a couple children.
