William Winnell was transported on the Waterloo, departing 11th Mar 1833 and arriving 3rd Aug 1833 with 216 passengers.
1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

Convict Notes




William Winnell married Sarah Brewer at St James' Old Cathedral, West Melbourne on 21 December in 1841. At this time he was using the family name Williams a name the family was to use until at least 1846 as shown on the registration details of the births of his first four children. At the time of their marriage William and Sarah were both living at River Plenty, Victoria. BDM and Land Records show the family remained living in Kilmore, Moranding and Tallarook in Victoria. William was buried on 7 March 1888 at the New Melbourne Cemetery in Compartment HH, Public/paupers grave which is an umarked space of land as there is no specific grave location for a public burial.
William Winnelle/Winnell was transported along with James Idle, Matthias Naylor and Robert Kay, all for housebreaking. He was 24 on arrival and assigned to James Hughes. 1839: TOL: Queanbeyan 3/3/1840: TOL Passport - Queanbeyan Bench. 1/10/1840: TOL Passport - on the recommendation of Mr A McLeod.
