William Winnell married Sarah Brewer at St James' Old Cathedral, West Melbourne on 21 December in 1841. At this time he was using the family name Williams a name the family was to use until at least 1846 as shown on the registration details of the births of his first four children. At the time of their marriage William and Sarah were both living at River Plenty, Victoria. BDM and Land Records show the family remained living in Kilmore, Moranding and Tallarook in Victoria. William was buried on 7 March 1888 at the New Melbourne Cemetery in Compartment HH, Public/paupers grave which is an umarked space of land as there is no specific grave location for a public burial.
