Convict Notes
Assize Intelligence. Transportation.— Fourteen years : Elizabeth Winter and Charlotte Winter, charged with stealing a sheep, the property of R L Line ; and Mary Snook, for stealing watch, &c. the property of John Trollop . . Bath Chronicle, 7 April 1825.
Charlotte (Winter) daughter of ??? (Winter)/Elizabeth (???) was born in 1785, perhaps in Somerset. She was convicted in Somerset Assizes in 1825 of receiving stolen goods, with her mother, & sentenced to 14yrs transportation. She is described as good in gaol, her character unknown. She had a brother who had earlier arrived in Australia. There is no related information indicating who the brother was. She & her mother arrived at Hobart Town on 17 12 1825 She married Thomas (Chapman) on 28 10 1826. Thomas died in the period 1832-40. There is no related information of Thomas (Chapman), however a Thomas (Chapman) arrived in Van Diemens Land on 27 7 1821 on COUNTESS OF HARCOURT; he has an entry on this Website. On 22 5 1832 Charlotte's Conditional Pardon was recommended & approved on 18 7 1834. On 20 12 1833 she was fined 5shillings for drunkenness and ordered to pay 1sh6p damages, in default to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour in the House of Corrections for 7days - for drunkenness and wilfully breaking two glass tumblers, the property of Thomas (Haskell). She became Free by Servitude on 29 3 1839. On 17 1 1840 she made application to marry William (Wattins) from ASIA, which was approved; & later on 10 3 1840 she applied to marry Henry (Cartwright) fro WOODMAN. Henry (Cartwright) has an entry on this Website; he was convicted for Life at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived at Van Diemens Land on 29 4 1826. In the meantime a Charlotte (Winter) widow, on 21 6 1837, married Thomas (Stephenson) at CofE Hobart Town. Noted that a Thomas (Stephenson) had also married Susanna (Philpott) on 22 2 1831 at Cof E Hobart Town. Both Thomas (Chapman) & Elizabeth (Winter) have entries on this Website.
