"POLICE - MANSION-HOUSE - Yesterday, [i.e. 5th December 1814] T. Winter, an African, was fully committed, charged with going into the house of Mr Stewart in Broad Street, and taking therefrom a quantity of wearing apparel." Thomas Winter was born in Jamaica (ship's indent), 20 years old , sentenced to 7 years for breaking and entering and stealing clthes. OLD BAILEY 11TH JANUARY 1815 He stole from the dwelling house owned by merchant brothers Messrs Henry and William Douglas. Martin Stewart was employed by them and lived above their accompting house. One day in late November Tom Winter had gone to the door ostensibly looking for omeone who Mt Stewart had not heard of. He went but Stewart heard a foot go upstaris and a few minutes later Winter ran down. Two days later the clothing was missed, some belonged to one the Messrs Douglas' valet. When Tom was taken a week later in Smithfield, he was wearing also a riding coat and pantaloons of Stewart and a waistcoat of one Walford. guilty, 7 years transporation. Personal details from Ship Indent: 1816 - Aged 22 years.Servant. born Jamaica - "Negro" 5ft 8 in; black hair and eyes ARRIVAL NSW - 18th October 1815 - On list of convicts disembarked from the "Mariner" and forwarded to Liverpool for distribution. Does not seem to appear again in recrods. Did he run?
