The committals to the county gaol during the past week will found to include; James Winwood, charged with having stolen two heifers, the property of Mr. Wm. Bevan, of the Hedge house Farm, the parish Tedstone-de-la-Mere, in the county of Hereford. The robbery was committed in the night of the 25th ultimo, and the recovery of the heifers and detection the thief were brought about under singular circumstances. The prisoner. Winwood, who,on Thursday last, passing through Stourport, on his way Kidderminster market, with the two heifers for sale, when he was accosted by a person who inquired their price of him, and to whom he eventually sold them. This person proved to be a farmer living in the neighbourhood from which the animals were stolen, and on his driving them home, they were claimed by Mr. Bevan his property. Inquiry was now made after Winwood, and on Friday he was apprehended at the shop of butcher at Whilboume, of whom he had just previously purchased a sheep, and had it slaughtered, intending to retail it. He was thereupon conveyed before Sir Thos. Winnington, by whom he was fully committed for trial. Winwood formerly curried the trade of fishmonger in this city, but has lately, we learn, kept cider house at Todststone-la-Mere, or the adjoining parish, Cheltenham Chronicle, 14 Dec 1837. James Winwood has been committed to Worcester gaol, charged with having stolen two heifers from Mr. Bevan, Tedstone-de-la-Mere, Herefordshire. He sold them at Stourport, to neighbour of Mr. Bevan's, and the latter claimed them as was driving them home. The offender was soon traced and committed to gaol.
