Richard was transported together with his brother William and other members of The Aldington Gang, a gang of smugglers from Aldington, Kent, England. According to records of the trial at Maidstone Crown Court, Kent - Richard was accused of shooting and killing a Coast Blockade Officer called Richard Morgan. During the affray at Dover a number of men shot their guns so it is not conclusive that Richard was the perputrator of this crime

Richard WIRE, and his brother William, were convicted at Kent, England on 6 Jan 1827 for aiding and abetting smuggling. Both received life sentences and were transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Governor Ready' in 1827. Richard stated that he was living on the family farm with his mother. His father had been struck dead by lightening. Protestant religion. Unmarried. Assignment to work services in the Colony of VDL. Ticket of Leave granted. Charges of bring drunk, in 1835 and 1836. Conditional Pardon approved 15 May 1839. No. 1994 (Link to his brother's record: https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/wire/william/87477) Richard WIRE settled in the New Norfolk district, Tasmania. Death: 4 Dec 1888 at New Norfolk. Age given as abt 90 yrs. An inquest was held as he had been found deceased. Result given as natural causes - apoplexy. Pauper. New Norfolk district.
