National Archives. HO 47/6/80 1787 Mar 31 Certificate/memorial of John Wilson and Francis Buller on prisoners capitally convicted on the Western Circuit but 'some favourable Circumstances' appeared on/after their trial recommended to mercy on the conditions set against their name: Somerset Assizes at Taunton 29 March 1787 James Wood, for stealing a cow. 7 years transportation.

James Wood was listed on the 'Surprize'. Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette Somerset, England 5 Apr 1787: TAUNTON ASSIZES. At the assizes for this county, which ended on Saturday night, Fourteen prisoners received sentence of death, viz. James Wood, for stealing a cow.
