Convict Notes
The following prisoners were last week conveyed to the hulks at Portsmouth from Lewes House of Correction :— John Coding, convicted of burglary at the Assizes, and sentenced to transportation for life; Robert P. Bannister, for stealing 7 books at Brighton, and previously convicted of felony, also for life; Charles Burgess and Richard Watkins, for breaking and entering a dwelling house at Westmeston ; and John Wood for stealing some bacon, &c. at Eastgrinstead, the last three tried at the Adjourned Sessions, and each sentenced to 7 years transportation. 13 Sep 1837, John was indicted for housebreaking at the Sussex Quarter Sessions and sentenced to transportation for 7 years. He was 15 years old, could read and write, a Baker's Boy with a rudy complexion, brown hair, grey eyes. He had a horizontal scar on left cheek, warts on back of right hand and fingers, scar the back of each forefinger. He arrived in Botany Bay, Colony of New South Wales aboard the ship, Emma Eugenia on 9 February 1838. John WOOD received his Ticket of Leave on 19 April 1842. Martha FORD and John WOOD were married on 19 September 1848 at St. Andrews Scots Church, Sydney, Colony of New South Wales. Their children included: :William John WOOD 1849–1875 :Lucy WOOD 1851–1928 :Thomas Boyd WOOD 1853–1929 :Martha WOOD 1855–1873 He passed away on 19 March 1856 in Richmond River, Colony of New South Wales and was buried at the Ballina Pioneer Cemetery, Ballina, Ballina Shire, New South Wales, Australia
