Michael WOOD was convicted at Clerkenwell, Middlesex, London on 6 May 1845 for stealing a purse & money. Previous convictions for stealing and vagrancy. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Pestonjee Bomanjee' arriving there 30 Dec 1845. Ship Surgeon's report: "bad". 14 yrs of age; labourer; 4'7" height; can read & write a little; Protestant; fresh complexion; brown hair; brown eyes; tatoos. Native place of birth: City Road,London. Father: Michael (ref - as stated on VDL records) Mother: Mary Brother: Matthew Colony of VDL: Assigned to Point Puer (a youth rehabilitation centre for young convicts), near Port Arthur. Further placements in Hobart, Launceston, Perth (Tas), Morven (now Evandale), Impression Bay & Port Arthur. 24 Dec 1850: Ticket of Leave granted. 11 April 1851: Misconduct, in being at New Town races and attempting to pick pockets. 3 weeks imprisonment with hard labour. 29 July 1853: Conditional Pardon approved. 19 April 1854: Departure from Launceston, VDL per ship 'Lady Bird' for Melbourne, Victoria.
