Assignment and Employment of Convicts, 1822 Town Gang. 1822 - Valentine Wood - 8 November 1822 - Hanged at Sydney for robbing Sergeant Barlow on the Prospect Road. Tuesday. Charles Lovell, Valentine Wood, and James Smedley, were arraigned for stopping and robbing on the Prospect-road, Quartermaster Serjeant Barlow, of the 48th, on the evening of the 3d of September last. Lovell and Wood were apprehended the following day near the same spot, with the spoil of another robbery only effected a few days before. Serjeant Barlow recognized the two first prisoners as being part of those who robbed him ; and they, not being able to disprove the same, were found Guilty-Remanded.




Valentine WOOD was convicted at Salop, Shropshire, England in 1816. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to New South Wales, Australia per the ship 'Sir Wiliam Bensley' 1817. Transferred to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Elizabeth Henrietta'. Colony of VDL: Clear conduct record 1818: at Port Dalrymple (George Town) July 1818: notice of being absent - Valentine Wood, convict, 5'6" tall, aged 19yrs, fair complexion, black eyes. Arrived per the Brig Elizabeth Henrietta. Absconded from the County of Cornwall, VDL.
