William Wood was transported on the Marion, departing 30th Oct 1851 and arriving 30th Jan 1852 with 281 passengers.
Built 1834 at Calcutta. Wood ship of 684 Tons. The 1847/48 voyage sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) BUT also went on to Port Phillip Bay, Victoria where 300 exiles disembarked. (The newspaper source says they were from Millbank, Pentonville & Parkhurst prisons.)

Rosemary, I don't think that this William Wood is the man who was sentenced at Essex, as his sentence was for Life. I think this is the case of this William Wood , who was transported on the Marion. Dover. William Wood and Richard Gibbs, charged with stealing at St. John's, Thanet, one pair of boot shoes, the property of Edward White.—Each seven years transportation. They were also charged with stealing at St .John's, Thanet, one pair of shoes, the property of Ann Wood. Each seven days' imprisonment, and hard labor. Kentish Gazette, 23 Oct 1849. William Wood, 18, and Richard Gibbs, 17, mariners, charged with stealing, at Thanet, a pair of boot shoes. Guilty; and a former conviction having been produced, both prisoners were now sentenced to 7 years' transportation. Dover Telegraph, 20 Oct 1849. Richard Gibbs was transported to Van Diemens Land on the Pestonjee Bomanjee, arriving July 1852.
This is my 3 x great maternal grandfather who accidently killed policeman Robert Bamborough near Rayleigh road hutton in 1850.
