Thomas Wool was transported on the Recovery, departing 27th May 1837 and arriving 8th Oct 1837 with 280 passengers.
Built 1799 Batavia, 493 tons. 1823 voyage. Also arrived the same morning, (i.e. Thursday last) from Ireland, having sailed from the Cove of Cork on the 5th April, the ship Recovery, Captain Fotherley, with 180 male convicts, in tolerable health : no deaths on the passage. Surgeon Superintendent, Dr. Cunningham, R. N. The guard comprises a detachment of the 1st, or Royals, commanded by Captain Gill, who is accompanied by his Lady. Three free passengers come out by this conveyance, at the expence of the Crown. Sydney Gazette, Thurs 7 Aug 1823. 1835 voyage. Surgeon's general remarks. On 5th October 1835, the Guard embarked at Deptford, consisting of 1 staff, 1 subaltern, 2 sergeants, 1 drummer, 26 rank and file of the 28th Regiment, accompanied by 8 women and 4 children. On the 19th at Spithead we received on board 160 male convicts from the Leviathan and 120 from the York Hulk and in the 30th got under weigh, previous to which, the convicts were discharged to the hulks in consequence of their being a great nuisance on board. Old Bailey: THOMAS WOOL, ROBERT TOOMAY, JOHN WATSON, Theft > simple larceny, Theft > receiving, 4th July 1836. Offences: Theft > simple larceny; Theft > receiving Verdicts: Guilty > pleaded guilty; Guilty > no_subcategory; Not Guilty > unknown Punishments: Transportation; Imprisonment > no_subcategory THOMAS WOOL was indicted for stealing, on the 22nd of June, 60 musquash skins, value 10s.; and 60 others skins, value 10s.; the goods of John Bates and ROBERT TOOMAY and JOHN WATSON for feloniously receiving the same, well knowing them to have been stolen; against the statute, &c.; to which Thomas Wool pleaded GUILTY. Aged 30.— Transported for Seven Years. Toomay. I did not know they were stolen—I was to get a shilling for selling them—I received them from Wool. TOOMAY— GUILTY. Aged 24.— Confined Three Months. WATSON— NOT GUILTY. Thomas Wool was listed as 37 years old on arrival in VDL. His native place was Cork, Ire. Thomas was single, 5'2½" tall, brown hair, dark brown whiskers, grey eyes, swarthy complexion, breast hairy. Jan. 1842: TOL 16/2/1843: CP 4/12/1843: Free Certificate.
