In 1836 he stole 24 necklaces and 4 bootlaces and received life sentence. In 1839 he was sent to Molong and worked as a shepherd, clearing, fencing and building, and gained his Ticket of Leave on March 18th, 1845. In 1854 he married ELIZA JOHNSON, and in 1861 he selected 100 acres at The Shades, where he built a slab home and planted an orchard and vines.
