James Wooton was transported on the Marion, departing 30th Oct 1851 and arriving 30th Jan 1852 with 281 passengers.
Built 1834 at Calcutta. Wood ship of 684 Tons. The 1847/48 voyage sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) BUT also went on to Port Phillip Bay, Victoria where 300 exiles disembarked. (The newspaper source says they were from Millbank, Pentonville & Parkhurst prisons.)

James married Sarah Bosworth 29 Feb 1844. She died in 1845 after giving birth to one son, William Bosworth Wootton.




James was said to be 48 years old on arrival, however on the Sick List below, he was listed as being 44 in 1851. Sick List of the Marion: James Wootton, aged 44, Convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, concussion of the brain, from Millbank Prison, was attempting to go across the fore hatchway for which he fell into the fore hold; put on sick list 1 January 1852, discharged 28 January 1852 cured. James was a widower with 4 children, 5’6” tall, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, healthy build, scar on left hand and left eye. No report found on how he died. There was also a John Wootton on board the Marion, same place of trial and date and crime, could be his brother.
