Convict Notes
An unsuccessful attempt was made four prisoners make their escape from Aylesbury gaol on Saturday night last. Their names are James Nicholls and John Wright, charged with a burglary at Great Missenden ; and John Hook and John Tucker, charged with a highway robbery at Langley Marsh. They had been shut up, usual, their sleeping cells for the night; from the grating of which one of them wrenched an iron bar. With this tool they broke the patent locks, and pushed back the bolts which fastened the doors their cells. Three of them (the fourth being unable get out) having made their way into another room, called the condemned cell, began to work under the sill of a grated window; but their labours were of no use; the massive thickness of the walls resisted their utmost efforts, and would have entirely defeated their intention of escaping, even if they had had better tools and more time. Australia, Colonial Secretary's Papers 1788-1825 to His Excellency Sir Thomas Brisbane KGB Captain General and Commander in Chief in and over the Territory of New South Wales and its Dependencies. Petition probably written in 1825. States That your Excellency's Petitioner arrived in this Colony per Ship Manges in the year 1824, was tried at Aylesbury in the County of Buckinghamshire and was transported to NSW leaving a wife and one child "to deplore his life who resided in the town of Olney in the County of Buckinghamshire when Petitioner was banished from his country. That your Petitioner is now in the employ of Mr Reuben Hannam residingin the District of Airds in whose service he has been since his arrival in this Colony. Your Petitioner humble takes the liberty to state that he has been in His Majesties Service for ?? 12, 13, or 18 years that he served 8 years in the East Indies and was in the taking of the Nepaul Country. Petitioner humbly implores Your Excellency to be gracious" Extra Information.. Governor Brisbane was Governor until 1825 so even though this petition is undated it seems likely it was written in 1825. John Wright landed from the Ship Mangles on 2nd March, 1825 His sentence was life.
