APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 6 Aug 1853 - William WRIGHT (per "William Jardine") to Catherine MAGUIRE (per "Blackfriar"). (ref. 52/1/6) 27 Oct 1853 - William WRIGHT (per "William Jardine") to Susanna BURKE (per "Blackfriar"). Approved. (ref. 52/1/6) MARRIAGE: at St. George's Church of England, Hobart, VDL, on 23 Jan 1854 - William WRIGHT, gardener, aged 35 yrs to Susan BURKE, widow, aged 38 yrs. (Susan signed with 'x' mark). Witnesses - John & Honora Spick. (ref. 37/1/13 no. 294) note: remarriages were permitted, within the Colonies, providing Govt approval given.
William WRIGHT was convicted at Tiverton, Devon, England on 9 July 1846 for receiving stolen lead. 14 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship "William Jardine" arriving 14 Nov 1850. Ship surgeon's report: "good". Married man; 6 children; aged 34yrs; lacemaker; 5'7" height; sallow complexion; dk brown hair; grey eyes; can read & write; Protestant. Native place of birth: Tiverton, England. Wife: Hannah (ref. Convict Indent record) Mother: Sarah Sister: Elizabeth Brothers: Robert & Daniel 21 Nov 1850: Station Gang - Prison Barracks, Hobart. 1851: Richmond (north of Hobart) - Absent without leave. Admonished. 31 Oct 1851: Admitted to Hospital. 8 Nov 1851: Returned to service work. 16 Dec 1851: Applied for Ticket of Leave, but advised he must serve more time. 22 June 1852: Applied for Ticket of Leave, but advised he must serve more time. 1853: Mr.Ben Guy, Richmond - Neglect of duty. 1 month's hard labour. 1 March 1853: Applied for a Ticket of Leave. Advised he must serve 2 more months. 31 May 1853: Ticket of Leave granted. (document of parole after they had proved they could be trusted, and were allowed some freedoms. Still had to attend Muster and live within certain boundaries.) 10 May 1854: Conditional Pardon approved. (Freedom from the convict system but still had to remain in the Australian Colonies.
