George YATES was convicted at Preston, Lancaster, England on 26 Feb 1847 for stealing - a leg or shoulder of mutton sheep. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Eden' arriving Hobart 21 Jan 1849. Single man; aged 21 yrs; a labourer; Church of England; can read & write; fair complexion; brown hair; light brown eyes; 5'8 1/4" height; end of fingers on right hand crippled. Native place of birth: Blackburn. Brother: William (ref. convict indent record) Sisters: Ellen, Elizabeth & Margaret Colony of VDL: Assigned to work service. Ticket of Leave granted. 1852: Hobart district 4 March 1854: Certificate of Freedom issued. Application for Permission to Marry: 9 July 1851 - George YATES (per Eden) to Mary Walsh (per Australasia). ref. 52/1/4 (Did not apparently proceed, as Mary married a George Moore in Oct 1851.
