Richard Yates was convicted at Stafford on 10/03/1840 for sheep-stealing. 15yr sentence. (Tried with George Slater & Thomas Kettle - also convicted and transported on same ship.)Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Duncan', arriving 18/04/1841. Gaol Report: Previously in prison. Connections very bad. Hulk Report: Good. Single man; aged 23yrs; Protestant; literate; blacksmith & chainmaker; 5'4"; fair complexion; Hazel eyes; dk brown hair. Native place - Warsell, Staffordshire. Father: William (a carpenter) Brother: Joseph Sisters: Harriet; Sarah; Emma; Rhoda; Eliza & Jane. 2yrs Probation in Colony. 1843: Perth (Tas); 1845: Liffey Rivulet. Ticket of Leave 20/04/1847. Conditional Pardon 30/01/1849.
