Anthony Young was convicted with Ralph Pearson junior. National Archives hold a petition for Ralph Pearson junior, which gives details of the conviction. HO 17/54/491832 Sept 28; 1840 May 18 Prisoner name: Ralph Pearson Junior. Prisoner age: 22. Prisoner occupation: Iron [foundry] worker. Court and date of trial: Newcastle-upon-Tyne Summer Assizes 1829. Crime: Highway Robbery - assaulting and robbing John McGie of his tobacco box and pocket knife in July 1829. Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Character bad. Annotated: Nil; Governor of New South Wales has granted a conditional pardon. Petitioner(s): John Akenhead (the prisoner's master) and William Hawks (his former master) with 35 inhabitants of Gateshead; Ralph Pearson Senior (the prisoner's father) with the convict's late and present masters and 14 inhabitants or town officers of Newcastle-upon-Tyne; two petitions from John Adamson (Under Sheriff); Robert Shafto Hawks (employer); Ralph Pearson Senior. Grounds for clemency: Intoxicated at the time of the offence; led into the offence by bad company; has behaved well in New South Wales; has served sufficient of his sentence to be eligible for a pardon; previous good character; his employer is willing to re-employ the convict.
