Convict Notes
On 25 November 1825 three convicts seized the government cutter, Maria shortly after it departed from Hobart bound for Maria Island with stores. They had hidden themselves in the hold and emerged to overpower the captain and crew and take control of the cutter. Two of the convicts were identified as James Young (Lady Castlereagh 1818) and Richard Williams (Earl St Vincent 1820) while a third man remained unnamed. They put the crew ashore near Cape Pillar and headed out to sea, never to be heard of again. (See: Hobart Town Gazette 3 Dec 1825, p. 2.)
