Globe London, England 25 Oct 1837 Horse Stealing in Essex.— At the Essex Quarter Sessions, Robert Young, 26, sawyer, and John Gardiner, 26, butcher, were indicted for stealing a mare from James Stebbing of Great Bromley. The prosecutor stated that on Thursday, July 26, he lost his mare from Bromley Thicks. On the Saturday following he went to Colchester, where he saw some handbills which stated that a mare had been detained at Maldon by Brown the jailer, in whose possession he afterwards saw it. Brown stated that on the morning of July 26th, he saw the prisoners going through the town towards Danbury with two mares. Gardiner was riding one, which was a brown mare, and Young was walking by the side. The horses appeared worn down with fatigue, and he followed them to Runsell Anchor, a distance of four miles. He found the prisoners drinking there, and the two mares standing at the door. He remarked that they had got a nice brown mare there, upon which one of the prisoners said he was going to take her to a gentleman in Kent. Witness asked him if he had any letter with it, and he said he had not. Gardiner said he had bought both of a butcher named Wenden, at Wigborough. Witness knew there was no person of such a name living at Wigborough, and told them that on their attempting to go he should stop them. Gardiner then attempted to get away, and it was as much as five men could do to prevent him ; Young also made a move towards the window, but he was handcuffed with some difficulty, and both prisoners were then taken to Maldon in a cart. The prisoners were both found guilty ;' and they were again indicted for stealing another mare from the same place, the property of Peace Simons, a widow, at Great Bromley. The evidence was similar to that of the last case, and a verdict of guilty was again returned. They were sentenced to transportation for ten years for the first offence, and at the expiration of that time fifteen years for the second. John Gardiner arrived NSW per Bengal Merchant 1838. ________________________________________ Robert Young was listed as 26 years old on arrival. Place of Birth: Harley.
