TRIAL: 1831, 18 September at Glasgow: William Young, 16, a drawboy from Paisley, Renfrewshire was tried - along with Thomas Hunter, a 17 year old distillery worker and Alexander Speirs, an 18 year carter - for theft by housebreaking from the home of William Henderson of Woodside, Houston (see National Records of Scotland, Reference AD14/31/241). A drawboy worked in the textile industry as a weaver’s assistant, according to the Dictionary of Old Professions. Note: William is listed on VDL records on arrival in 1832 as a carter by trade, aged 19 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON18-1-10$init=CON18-1-10p142). IN VDL: 1839, 5 November: He was granted a Ticket of Leave (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-47$init=CON31-1-47p220). 1842: William was recommended for a Conditional Pardon, which was approved on 25 October 1843 (see Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899; Pardons, Leave, Discharge; Registers of conditional pardons issued, 1842-1843). 1846: He was granted a Free Certificate (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-47$init=CON31-1-47p220)
