Convict Notes

Committed to our County Gaol, ... Samuel Yoxall, charged having stolen at a bridle-bit, and other articles, the property, of Charles Davenport; Staffordshire Advertiser, 4 Oct 1828. Prisoners. A DISMISSED … - Samuel Yoxall. —This prisoner was in the employ of Mr. Charles Davenport, of Tunstall, surgeon, stable servant, the 11th of September, on which day he was dismissed, taking the apparel along with him. For some reason the prosecutor thought it proper to get the box back to have it examined, which he did: and on opening it the presence of some other persons, a top coat, bridle, pair of scales, and other articles, Mr. D.’s property, were discovered. The prisoner made no other defence than that of disclaiming all knowledge of the affair. He was found guilty ; and in order that his punishment might be warning to other servants, the Court sentenced him to 7 year’s transportation. Staffordshire Advertiser, 18 Oct 1828. The undermentioned convicts have been removed from our county Prison to the Retribution Hulk at Sheerness, viz: … Samuel Yoxall, … sentenced to transported for seven years each. Staffordshire Advertiser, 15 Nov 1828.

Samuel was convicted of theft (stealing a bridle), aged 21, born in Stafford, Staffordshire, England in about 1801.
