TRIAL: 25 August, 1856: At the Hertford Sessions, Joseph Adams, 40, canal bargeman, and William Hammond, labourer, 27, both of Ware, were charged with "stealing, on the 20th August, a purse containing ... [money] from the person" (Herts Guardian, Agricultural Journal and General Advertiser, Saturday 30 August 1856, p2). Joseph Adams was convicted and sentenced to 6 years' penal servitude (two previous convictions for felony were taken into account). William Hammond, also convicted, was given a jail term of 6 months (England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892; England; Hertfordshire; 1856). --00--
